Poncan Theatre

Add to plan Remove from plan

The ornate interior, elaborate ceilings and stained glass of the historic Poncan Theatre recall the luxury of this circa 1927 Vaudeville house and movie palace. The Poncan has been carefully revitalized, maintaining much of its original grandeur so future generations can enjoy the architectural and historical significance of the building. It is on the National Register of Historic Buildings and is the one of the interests of downtown Ponca City, which is also registered as a National Historic District.

The Poncan is one of the few remaining examples of the "atmospheric" theater design. The original designers wanted visitors to feel as though they were transported to an elegant villa on the Bay of Naples as soon as they stepped foot into the building. During restoration, one of the world's largest collections of hand-painted lobby art was discovered. This unique treasure trove of historical original movie posters, from films of 1931-1937, is very rare. These works have been cleaned and framed for visitors to enjoy.

Visitors can take a tour of the theatre to learn more about the architecture and rich history of the Poncan and those who performed there, as well as view the rare gems in the lobby art collection. During the tour, visitors may catch a glimpse of something unusual, as it has been reported that a ghostly woman in white has been seen in the balcony along with other apparitions. Call or visit the website for a schedule of events or to arrange for a guided tour.
