Visit the Fort Washita Historic Site & Museum in Durant to experience Oklahoma history, view a variety of historical exhibits and attend living history events.
Built in 1842 and operated through 1865, Fort Washita's purpose was to protect the Chickasaw and Choctaw Tribes from marauding plains tribes. Log structures were built at first (an officer's quarters is open for viewing today), then permanent native sandstone and refined wooden structures were built. Federal forces abandoned the fort at the beginning of the Civil War in 1862. Confederate forces then occupied it and it became a major supply depot for Confederate troops in Indian Territory. In 1962, the fort was acquired by the Oklahoma Historical Society, who restored some of the fort's original structures. Fort Washita is now managed by the Chickasaw Nation.
Fort Washita is also rumored to be haunted by Aunt Jane, a strong-willed woman who was murdered by thieves sometime before 1861 because she wouldn't disclose the location of her buried money. The money was never found, and Aunt Jane was buried on the grounds of Fort Washita. However, her ghost has reportedly been seen floating near the ruins wearing a white gown. She is also reported to have possessed the body of a young child named Molly Stalcup sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century.
